Bonus programs

Updated 31 August 2026

A bonus program is the rule a business chooses for what a purchase gives back. The rule decides whether customers return, so it is worth choosing deliberately rather than copying the shop next door.

Points for what people spend

The most common rule: every fixed amount spent returns a number of points, and points come off a later bill. It suits businesses with frequent, varied basket sizes, because the reward scales with what someone actually spends.

The two numbers that matter are how much spending earns a point and what a point is worth back. Set them together — generous earning with a worthless point convinces nobody.

Stamp cards

Buy nine coffees, the tenth is free. A stamp card counts items or visits rather than money, which makes it right for a business selling one thing at one price.

It is the easiest program to explain at the till, and the easiest for a customer to hold in their head — they know exactly how close they are.

Levels

Levels rank customers by what they have earned over their lifetime, not by their current balance, so a level is kept rather than spent. Higher levels earn faster, which gives regulars a reason to stay regular instead of shopping on price alone.

Coupons and referrals

A coupon is a named offer claimed with points and redeemed once — useful for moving a specific product rather than discounting everything. A referral rewards a customer for bringing someone new, and rewards the newcomer too.

Running one on One Bonus

A business on One Bonus sets its own rules and can run more than one program at a time — points alongside a stamp card, levels alongside coupons. Customers carry the same card into every shop on the network, so nothing new has to be handed out to start.

Common questions

How do I choose between points and a stamp card?

Count the visits. If people come often and buy roughly the same thing each time, use stamps — they are easier to explain and easier to want. If the basket varies, use points, because a stamp rewards a small purchase and a large one identically.

Can a bonus program run in more than one branch?

Yes. On One Bonus a program belongs to the business, and each branch can either follow the organisation’s rules or run its own. A customer earning in one branch spends in another unless the business chooses otherwise.

How long does it take to launch a bonus program?

The rules take minutes to set. The waiting is the merchant check every new business goes through before it can serve customers — and programs, branches, staff and the card design can all be prepared while that runs.
