Bonus or discount

Updated 31 August 2026

A discount is money given away on the sale in front of you. A bonus is money set aside to buy the next one. Both cost the same on paper and do opposite things in practice, and choosing between them is the first real decision in designing a loyalty program.

What each one buys

A discount buys the transaction happening now. It is the right tool for a first visit, for clearing stock that is about to go stale, and for competing on a specific item where the customer is comparing prices.

A bonus buys the next transaction. It costs nothing at the moment of sale and is only paid out if the customer comes back, which means an unredeemed balance is a cost you never incur.

The cost is not the same

A ten percent discount is paid on every single sale. A ten percent bonus is paid only on sales where the customer returns and spends it, and some share of every balance is never spent at all.

So the bonus is cheaper for the same headline number. What it costs instead is patience — the return does not arrive today, and a business with a cash problem this month will feel that.

Where a discount is the wrong answer

A permanent discount is not a discount, it is a price. Customers learn the real number, the marked price stops meaning anything, and the business has cut its margin without buying any loyalty at all.

Worse, a weekly discount teaches people to wait for the discount. Once that habit forms, the full-price weeks are dead, and the only way out is to stop — which costs a visible drop before it recovers.

Running both without cancelling them out

The usual mistake is applying both to the same purchase: the customer takes the discount, the points become invisible, and the business has paid twice for one visit.

The split that works is by stage of the relationship. A discount or a welcome bonus for the first visit, and points from then on. On One Bonus these are separate programs and can be switched independently, so the split is a setting rather than a policy nobody follows.

Common questions

Which is better for a business, bonus points or a discount?

Points, if the goal is repeat business. A discount is paid on every sale and buys nothing beyond that sale; points are only paid when the customer returns, and a portion is never claimed. A discount is the better tool only for a first visit or for clearing stock.

Do customers prefer discounts or bonuses?

Discounts feel better in the moment because the value is immediate and needs no explanation. Bonuses win over time, because an unspent balance is something the customer owns and does not want to waste — which is what brings them back.

Is a permanent discount a good loyalty program?

No. A permanent discount becomes the price, and a regular discount teaches customers to wait for it. Neither creates any reason to return that a competitor cannot match by matching the number.
